Joe’s response to “The 13 Most Useless College Majors”

newsweek:

1. Fine Arts

2. Drama and Theatre Arts

3. Film, Video, and Photographic Arts

4. Commercial Art and Graphic Design

5. Architecture

6. Philosophy and Religious Studies

7. English Literature and Language

8. Journalism

9. Anthropology and Archeology

10. Hospitality Management

11. Music

12. History

13. Political Science and Government

(Ed: Your primary tumblrs majored in two of these and now work in the field of a third.)

Update! Our arts critic has some words of encouragement for you.

Update 2! Here are the most USEFUL college majors.

I sent this list and the responses the Newsweek tumblr received to my American Dream/American Lit professor the other day. I was really frustrated by this, considering most of my friends and I are majoring in at least one of those majors.

Clearly, we aren’t in it to make money. We want to be happy, but this list makes it seem like being happy is “useless.” Being happy is awesome. I want to be happy and I want the people around me to be happy. It would be nice to have money so I don’t have to worry about financial issues (if I end up teaching in Fairfax County, I’m likely going to struggle to pay rent on a teacher’s salary), but money isn’t something I’m going to put first. Happiness, family, friends, adventure, good things. Not money.

I wanted to find out what he thought about it, since a lot of our class is based around “What is the American Dream now?” and thinking about what our values are and where we want to be after we graduate (most of my classmates are seniors).

Here’s what he replied:

I read a good portion of it. I really don’t understand the usefulness of these kinds of “lists” because if all we want to do is boil things down to dollars and cents, if the only thing that matters is how much money you make, then why would we even have majors? If the others are foolish pursuits, what is the point? I look at the list and realize I’m on there twice (#3 and #7).

It’s a simple matter of what one values in life (and it’s completely fine to value money over something else if that’s what one wants). I value nothing over enjoying my job and getting to spend time with my family…and free time. You (usually) can’t have it all and quite often you have to trade time with family, enjoyment of job, salary, long hours, etc. for one of the others. It’s just a matter of looking within yourself and realizing what kind of person you are.

For earning money, I think there is no more profound perspective than this moment from Citizen Kane:

Kickass Dad of the Day: When Stuart Chaifetz learned that his 10-year-old son, Akian, was being violent and disruptive in class, he was puzzled. He knew Akian, who has autism, to be mild-mannered and sensitive, and had a hunch that something more was going on. But after several meetings with a team of school officials created to help special-needs students, nothing changed. So Chaifetz did what any concerned parent would do.

On the morning of Friday, February 17, 2012, I wired my son and sent him to school. That night, when I listened to the audio my life changed forever. I heard my son being bullied by his teacher and aide. The six and a half hours of audio I had proved that my son wasn’t hitting the teacher because there was something wrong with him — he was lashing out because he was being mocked, mistreated and humiliated. His outbursts were his way of expressing that he was being emotionally hurt at school.

The New Jersey father has since launched a website full of damning evidence and aFacebook page, and he is petitioning the state to change legislation so that teachers who bully children are immediately fired. The aide has been fired, but the rest of the staff have merely been relocated.

“I seek a full and public apology from all those adults who were in my son’s class for what they did to him,” Chaifetz says. “It is also far past time that these issues are allowed to be hidden from public view.”

[vvv]

This is infuriating. Picking on a student is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY INAPPROPRIATE AND SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. School is supposed to be a safe environment for ALL children, especially those with special needs. These teachers should be fired immediately and be stripped of their license. Anyone who treats their students like that should not be in a classroom. I’m so frustrated right now. But I’m also so proud of this father for taking a stand and sticking up for his child.

"I hate what capitalism has done to university, and all inevitable “privileged white princess” accusations aside, I refuse to content myself with the fact that it’s become all about the marketability of degrees as opposed to the simple joy in learning and gaining expertise in a field you love. Ambitious, passionate young people deserve so much better than this."

"I majored in #11 and then a version of #13 in undergrad and ended up with a Masters in #8. Looking down this list, it seems these are the majors that make you happy instead of making you rich. They also seem to be degrees that prepare someone to contribute thoughtful or beautiful things to the world. I think we need a new definition of useless."

HAS EVERYONE SEEN THIS? This happened recently. The story goes that this father was playing outside with his kids and went to go talk to this guy(the white man), because he was shooting his guns  in the area where they were playing. The white man came over and shot him in the head FOR NO REASON. Did the same thing to the wife WHILE THE KIDS WERE WATCHING. Swear, white people don’t give a damn anymore about being discrete. This is why we need to tighten gun laws. This why we need to have a predominantly ethnic (People of Color) police force and investigation unit to combat this crap. We wonder why the Black Panther is calling for the death of George Zimmerman, but think about it. They grew up in a time where a white man could lynch you or kill you IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, and go about their  business as if nothing even happened. We are now devolving back to a time where prosperity, peace, and higher knowledge will not come because whites feel as if they are being oppressed (meaning they don’t get to be superior to people of color anymore *white tears*)

I need everyone to either reblog this post or copy and paste the link so we can bring national attention to this story. It’s about time we make this an issue.

"A baffling, infuriating trend has cropped up in reviews of The Hunger Games: critics bodysnarking on Jennifer Lawrence. “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss,” writes the New York Times’ Manohla Dargis, “but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy comments that Lawrence’s “lingering baby fat shows here.” And—most bluntly—Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells calls Lawrence a “fairly tall, big-boned lady” who’s “too big” for Josh Hutcherson, who plays Katniss’s romantic interest. (In case the message didn’t come through: Wells thinks Jennifer Lawrence is BIG. He also thinks we should be wary of “certain female critics” who “may be susceptible to the lore of this young-female-adult-propelled franchise.”)"

“if critics are going to pick on a 21-year-old woman for not being skinny enough for a fantasy film, why haven’t they been more consistent in their critiques of actors’ bodies? I haven’t seen much concern about Liam Hemsworth’s muscular frame, even though his character in The Hunger Games occupies the same food-strapped world as Katniss.” (via dupery)

God help us all if this girl is being described as “big-boned” or is being criticised for her “lingering baby fat”.

I would like to take this time to wish an atomic wedgie to each of these writers. (via amandalynferri)

UHH. I can’t even. I’m so mad. Jennifer Lawrence, one of the most gorgeous young actresses out there right now, is TOO BIG!? TOO BIG!? THAT’S SUCH BULLSHIT. THIS IS WHY SO MANY GIRLS, INCLUDING MYSELF, HAVE OR HAD SERIOUS BODY ISSUES. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. SHE LOOKS LIKE A PERSON. A REAL PERSON. I don’t care if she’s not as “emaciated” as she was supposed to be in the book. Everyone is perfect the way they are. Fucking society.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Miss Universe Canada announced yesterday that 23-year-old finalist Jenna Talackova of Vancouver was disqualified from the Donald Trump-owned beauty pageant, but didn’t provide a reason.
“She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form,” competition officials said in a statement. Talackova, however, says she knows exactly why she was disqualified: She was born with male genitalia.
The 6’1” bombshell underwent sexual reassignment surgery in 2010 after living most of her life as a woman.
She wouldn’t speak with the press concerning the unceremonious scrubbing of her profile from the Miss Universe Canada website, but did take to Twitter to bemoan being “disqualified for being born.”
Many have noted that Miss Universe Canada’s only expressed requirements are that the contestant be a Canadian citizen and between the ages of 18 and 27. Nary a mention of gender confirmation surgery as being grounds for dismissal.
On Twitter, Talackova implied that she’s down but not through. “I’m disqualified, however I’m not giving up,” she tweeted. “I’m not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination.”

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Calls for the reform of Morocco’s penal code were sparked over the weekend as news spread of a teenage girl who had committed suicide after being compelled to marry her rapist.
In Morocco, a rapist can “opt out” of a prison term by marrying his victim, so long as the victim and their family agree. Despite this clause, many say victims are often strong-armed into marriages they want no part of.
16-year-old Amina Filali’s father, Lahcen, blamed the marriage on pressure from the courts. “The prosecutor advised my daughter to marry,” he told the online news site goud.ma. “He said: ‘Go and make the marriage contract’.”
According to Amina’s mother, the girl complained on more than one occasion that her husband/rapist was beating her, but was advised to be patient. On Saturday, Amina could no longer take the abuse, and made the decision to end her own life by swallowing rat poison.
Moroccan woman, galvanized by Amina’s tragic death, have taken to the streets and launched petitions to demand that criminal law be changed to make it explicit that rapists cannot be allowed to marry their victims.
Moroccan law is known for being relatively female-friendly, compared with the rest of North Africa. Despite this, nearly two-third of all Moroccan women experience violence in their lifetimes, and many attorneys are ignorant of recent pro-women reforms, such as the raising of the marriage age from 15 to 18.
